Clemson quarterback Cade Klubnik has pushed back against a false internet rumor that he was involved in a serious car crash over the weekend.
The false story ultimately reached his mother, who was left in tears before getting the truth from Klubnik himself.
‘I was sitting at home just hanging out with my roommates and my mom calls me crying,’ he told reporters Wednesday, via FOX Carolina.
‘And I’m like, ‘What’s going on?’ She’s tearing up, seeing if I’m OK. I’m like, ‘Yeah, I’m fine. What’s going on?’ That was the first I heard of it, and then the calls and texts started coming in.’
What Klubnik now calls a ‘messed up joke’ began on a Clemson message board and spread from there.
‘I don’t know who it was, but man, just shame on them for the pain that they had to put people that I love through,’ he added. ‘I’m not really interested in talking about it anymore, but it was a messed up joke, whatever. But I’m OK.’

Klubnik and Clemson will welcome the ‘other’ Tigers to the ‘other’ Death Valley on Saturday in a game with major national championship aspirations.
No. 4 Clemson and No. 9 LSU also boast two of the best quarterbacks in the country in Klubnik, who has already won a pair of ACC titles, and Garrett Nussmeier, another NFL prospect and Heisman contender.
‘He’s on his way to being a high draft pick,’ Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said. ‘He’s got a lot of poise. He’s got great instincts, really good pocket awareness. He’s got big time arm talent. He’s tough, and they’ve put a good group together up front.’
LSU’s Brian Kelly is equally impressed with Klubnik.
‘Cade Klubnik played his best football at the end of last year, and his dual-threat ability is central to their offense,’ Kelly said of Saturday’s opponent.
Curiously, LSU has dropped its last five season openers.
