Chiefs star breaks down in tears while talking about his late mom after signing new $94m contract

An emotional Kansas City Chiefs star got choked up after his first day of training camp for the 2025 season – just after getting a massive new contract in the offseason.

Trey Smith, a guard, inked a four-year, $94million contract just last week that made him the third-highest paid player at his position by total contract value and the highest paid by average annual value ($23.5million per year).

Reflecting upon the moment to the media, he started to break down in tears as he remembered his late mother – who passed away in 2015 when he was 15-years-old, reportedly from congestive heart failure.

‘I lost my mom when I was 15,’ Smith said while fighting through tears.

‘I made two promises to her. That I would get my degree and play in the NFL.

‘I didn’t promise her I’d be the highest paid, but I made a promise man.’

‘They sacrificed so much for me to be here. So much. So to share that moment… it was special, bro. It was special.’

He says he was at the barbershop when the call came through about his new deal.

Smith’s contract came after the team placed the franchise tag on him back in February.

Last season, Smith only gave up one-and-a-half sacks while starting all 17 games for the Chiefs.

With Kansas City’s pre-season program officially started, Smith and his teammates will hope to bounce back from last year’s defeat in Super Bowl LIX to the Philadelphia Eagles.
