Chelsea have struck a complete agreement with Xabi Alonso for the former Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen manager to become their next head coach – with the news filtering through minutes after their FA Cup final loss at Wembley Stadium.

The Blues, temporarily managed by Calum McFarlane, were beaten 1-0 by Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City after Antoine Semenyo’s winner. Alonso is expected to sign a four-year contract, which is currently being finalised with an announcement to follow.

Alonso, 44, was installed as Chelsea’s leading candidate last week, as reported by Daily Mail Sport, ahead of Andoni Iraola, Marco Silva, Oliver Glasner, Filipe Luis and Cesc Fabregas.

The Liverpool icon’s last spell in management ended when Real sacked him in January. He had joined the Spanish giants after guiding Leverkusen to the Bundesliga title in 2023-24 while also finishing as runner-up in the Europa League.

Alonso had been linked with the Liverpool job should Arne Slot leave Anfield this summer, but Chelsea are close to confirming he is officially Liam Rosenior’s successor.

Rosenior left Chelsea last month after less than four months in charge.

Chelsea have been intending to name Rosenior’s successor once this season has ended. Sources insisted they had been taking a disciplined approach in identifying the right long-term appointment, adding they were targeting a head coach who is aligned with the club’s vision, can develop their squad and deliver consistent performances and results.

The question has always been whether Chelsea could convince Alonso that they are the club for him, but that has now been proven possible.
