Chelsea put one hand on a sixth consecutive Women’s Super League title after Erin Cuthbert’s 91st-minute winner restored their eight-point lead at the top of the table.
Cuthbert powered home a diving header with time ticking away at the Etihad Stadium to seal a comeback victory for Sonia Bompastor’s side, who hold a commanding advantage with five games left.
‘The gaffer didn’t tell me to do that!’ a delighted Cuthbert said. ‘I’ve been challenging myself to get in the box more and I didn’t care what body part it hit, I just wanted to get to it first. When you are that close to goal, any touch will guide it in.’
City had taken the lead on the half-hour through Kerolin’s wonderful individual goal. The Brazilian received the ball from deep and dashed into the box, before slotting through Millie Bright’s legs.
The hosts will argue they should have had a second moments later, when Kerolin was taken down on the edge of the box and Jess Park pounced on the loose ball, curling into the top corner. But referee Kirsty Dowle had blown for the foul after the ball left Park’s boot.
The officials’ admission of guilt to City manager Nick Cushing at half-time will provide little comfort.
