  • Popular anchor got the news on Monday

Channel Seven sport editor Matt Carmichael has been made redundant after a long and successful career with the broadcaster.

The 44-year-old got the news that he has been axed on Monday, bringing his 23-year stint with the network to an end.

‘Matt will now be taking a well-deserved extended break. Matt leaves as a script craftsman,’ Seven news and current affairs director Ray Kuka told staff in an email, according to News Corp.

‘Matt has worked at Seven for two decades but, sadly, that will come to an end next month, fittingly after the Bathurst 1000 (car race).’

At the time of writing, Carmichael’s LinkedIn page still lists his occupation as sport editor at Seven, but his profile also says he is ‘open to work’ and can start ‘immediately’.

He has worked on Seven shows including Sunrise, and the network’s afternoon, 6pm and morning news bulletins.

Carmichael covered the Olympics, Commonwealth Games and a host of other sporting events.

He was front and centre at the Tokyo Games in 2021, interviewed late NBA legend Kobe Bryant at the Beijing Olympics in 2008, and has also worked on the Australian Open tennis.

Carmichael was very versatile, covering everything from AFL to rugby union, boxing, cricket and motor sport.

The Daily Mail has contacted Channel Seven for comment.

The news broke soon after it was revealed that beloved Seven weatherman Peter Murphy has announced his retirement after a 41-year career with the network.
