Veteran Channel Nine presenter Peter Overton has shocked millions of Aussies by reading a portion of a sport bulletin.

The 60-year-old filled in for one package’s introduction on last night’s 6pm bulletin – in addition to his regular news reading duties.

Overton stepped into the role with almost zero notice given after technical difficulties impacted regular sports presenter James Bracey.

‘I think the rain’s gotten into the satellite, so I’m going to do the sport till we get James back on air,’ he said.

The TV legend, who began his career as a sports reporter in the 1980s, kicked straight into gear and did the job in style.

‘Wests Tigers co-captain Jarome Luai has revealed he was shocked when Benji Marshall told him he wasn’t in the club’s plans for next season,’ Overton said.

‘But the future Eel, and Chief, says he has no hard feeling towards the Tigers, which in just 18 months, he’s helped lift off the bottom of the ladder, and into finals contenders,’ Overton continued.

After Overton’s introduction was read, and the pre-recorded package was aired, Bracey then returned to his duties and finished the sport for the night.

As he did so, the popular sports presenter offered Overton public praise following his impromptu performance.

‘Pete, great to see you returning to your sports reporting days mate. Top job mate. You still got it,’ Bracey said.

Overton began his media career at Channel Seven as a sports reporter in the 1980s.

He then made the move to Channel Nine in the early 1990s, starting as a news reporter, before becoming the weekend sports presenter.

The 60-year-old then assumed the role as the network’s flagship news presenter in 2009, and hasn’t relinquished his position as the 6pm news bulletin host since.
