  • Oxford United’s clash with Portsmouth was suspended after medical emergency
  • Club later confirmed fan is in a ‘stable condition’ after suffering a cardiac arrest
  • LISTEN NOW: It’s All Kicking Off! Will Liverpool recover from Everton blow in season-defining week?

A Championship clash between Oxford United and Portsmouth was paused for half an hour following a medical emergency in the crowd.

Gary Rowett’s side welcomed Pompy to the Kassam Stadium on Saturday looking to get back on track after failing to win their last three league games.

However, shortly after kick-off the game the game was suspended while medical staff attended to a supporter in the stands.

Both teams were ordered off the pitch as a treatment continued, before Oxford provided an update via social media noting that the fan was now in a stable condition in hospital.

It read: ‘Following a medical emergency which took place during today’s game, Oxford United can confirm a supporter suffered a cardiac arrest during the first half.

‘We are pleased to report they are now in a stable condition and receiving further treatment in hospital.’

Thames Valley Police Oxfordshire said on X: ‘We are currently assisting @SCAS999 and @oufcofficial with a medical emergency in the North Stand at the Kassam Stadium.

‘We would ask those at the game to please not post any footage or images from the incident. The game against @pompey is currently suspended.’

After play was eventually restarted, the game went into the interval goalless when the half-time whistle was finally blown, more than an hour after kick-off.

Portsmouth broke the deadlock minutes after play resumed for the second half, with Andre Dozzell firing the visitors into the lead.

Mark O’Mahoney added a second goal deep into stoppage time to seal the victory and move the club seven points clear of the relegation zone.

The incident comes just one month after a fan at Fratton Park passed away following a medical emergency during a clash with Middlesbrough.

‘We are devastated to report that a Pompey fan has died following a medical emergency at Fratton Park today,’ the club said in a statement.

‘Despite the valiant attempts of the emergency services, the supporter unfortunately passed away,’ the statement read.

‘Next of kin are aware. Our sincere thoughts and condolences go out to the supporter’s family and loved ones at this sad time.’
