Yesterday afternoon (Thursday 8 May) the Armed Forces Outreach from Shropshire Council hosted a VE Day Cream Tea at Severn Hospice in Shrewsbury, supported by the team at Refresh Café.
With over 80 veterans and family members joining us from around the county it was a wonderful afternoon of reflection, reminiscing, camaraderie, and laughter in a fantastic setting.

VE Day afternoon cream tea from left: Deb Wallace (Community Engagement Lead Nurse at Severn Hospice, Stuart Doyle (veteran and armed forces outreach volunteer) Ellen Appleby (veteran and nurse at the hospice), and Sarah Kerr, Armed Forces Outreach Co-ordinator
Music from the Shrewsbury Male Voice Choir, many of whom are veterans themselves, a VE Day themed quiz and lots of cream scones made for a perfect afternoon.
Veteran Champions, staff members and trustees from Severn Hospice also came along to chat with the veterans, along with some of our colleagues from Radfield Care and Health Watch Shropshire who are both signatories of the Armed Forces Community.
As they were leaving the veterans commented: “What a perfect afternoon spent with friends and fellow veterans to celebrate VE Day 80.”
