Aussie F1 star Oscar Piastri has spoken out after seeing a species of wasp named after him.

Reports have confirmed researchers have named the new breed, ‘Gwesped Piastrii’.

The wasp species has been identified in a Burmese Amber in Northern Myanmar.

Scientists have chosen to honour Piastri for his F1 achievements, as the breed’s amber colour reminds them of the McLaren’s papaya.

The news has since left the nine-time race winner absolutely thrilled.

‘Buzzing about this,’ Piastri said on Instagram.

Motorsport fans have also revealed their thought on the news, with the majority praising the surprising feat.

‘This is the most iconic thing I’ve ever seen,’ one person said in the comments of F1’s official post confirming the news.

‘Oscar must be buzzing,’ another claimed.

‘LOL best thing I’ve seen today,’ one more said.

This isn’t the first time Piastri has been honoured in some way.

The Melbourne born driver has been involved with fast food company Grill’d, and has seen his personalised burger added to the franchise’s menu.

Piastri will next take to the F1 track for the iconic Monaco Grand Prix next weekend.

He has so far claimed two podium finishes in 2026.
