On The Ground

A British woman has died after falling during a hike in the Pyrenees.

The 42-year-old was on Balaitus Peak when the incident occurred, prompting an alarm to be raised around 7.30pm on Saturday.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her 53-year-old partner, who was with her, was reported to be unharmed.

Spanish police sources told The Sun that the woman was a British national, born in the UK but residing in Finland.

A spokesperson for the Civil Guard said: “An investigation is ongoing and a report drafted by officers will be sent to a local investigating court along with the post-mortem results.

“At this stage the woman’s death is being treated as a tragic accident resulting from a fall.”

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) confirmed their involvement, with a spokesperson saying: “We are aware of a British woman who has died in Spain and are in contact with the local authorities.”

Balaitus Peak is situated on the border between Spain and France.

It is 3,144 metres (10,315 feet) high.
