Sir Keir Starmer said British aircraft are “in the sky” as part of “co-ordinated regional defensive operations to protect our people, our interests and our allies” after the US and Israel attacked Iran.

Mr Starmer said in a televised statement that Iran should refrain from further strikes and cease violence and oppression against its people, and stressed the importance of preventing further escalation and of returning to a diplomatic process.

Britain was not involved in the strikes on Iran, and the Government advised UK nationals in some parts of the Middle East to “shelter in place”.

President Donald Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu launched co-ordinated strikes across Iran Saturday in a “preventative attack”.

Iran has retaliated with strikes on US and Israeli military bases across the Middle East, after cities including Tehran were struck on Saturday morning.
