New York Yankees star Oswaldo Cabrera was taken off the field in an ambulance after appearing to break his ankle in a horrifying midgame moment.

The Yankees were closing in on a routine win at T-Mobile Park against the Seattle Mariners when the third baseman slid in to home plate to make the score 11-5.

As he scored the run, though, his ankle bent backwards and he was left in excruciating pain as medics rushed onto the field to help him.

Cabrera slammed his fists into the dirt and looked down at his ankle, as his teammates rushed to try and help.

The game was then subject to a lengthy delay as an ambulance was driven onto the field and Cabrera was then loaded onto a stretcher and placed in the back.

During the delay, players from both teams took a knee and the stadium fell silent as coaches tried to console Cabrera.

He was taken straight to a local hospital and is likely to undergo immediate surgery to repair the injury.

Cabrera, 26, has appeared in every position for the Yankees apart from catcher and his teammates were visibly distraught by the injury.

In the game itself, the Yankees saw out the 11-5 victory to take the first game of the series and move their season record to 24-17.

The Yankees are top of the AL East, with the Boston Red Sox 2.5 games back.
