Brazil and Inter Milan icon Lucio has been hospitalised and placed in intensive care after suffering burns to various parts of his body.

The 47-year-old is being treated at a hospital in Brasilia following the incident on Thursday. In a statement, the facility said Lucio was ‘stable, conscious, and under constant observation.’

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Lucio sustained the burns in a domestic accident at home.

The extent and cause of his injuries have not been disclosed.

Lucio, who retired from football in 2019, is best known for anchoring the Brazil defence during their victorious 2002 World Cup campaign and starring in Inter Milan’s historic treble-winning side under Jose Mourinho in 2010.

A powerful centre back with a commanding presence, Lucio enjoyed a glittering career in both Europe and South America, representing clubs such as Bayer Leverkusen, Bayern Munich, Inter and briefly Juventus before returning to Brazil, where he turned out for Sao Paulo and Palmeiras among others.

During his time at Inter, he won the Serie A title, two Coppa Italia trophies, the Champions League, the Supercoppa Italiana and the FIFA Club World Cup — all in the space of two years.

He also won three Bundesliga titles with Bayern Munich, in addition to two Confederations Cups and the 2002 World Cup with Brazil, for whom he earned 105 caps and scored four goals.

Lucio joined Juventus after his spell at Inter but made just one appearance for the Bianconeri before returning to Brazil to see out the final years of his playing career.

His final professional match came in 2019, bringing the curtain down on a 22-year career that saw him win 17 team trophies.
