Jamie Gittens sped away from Borussia Dortmund’s Hohenbuschei training ground on Tuesday night disappointed after being denied a move to Chelsea in time for the Club World Cup.
Chelsea left it late to raise their offer for the England U21 international winger and ultimately, with the clock ticking, chose not to go beyond a bid of £42million.
They had previously put in a £29.5m bid that was also knocked back by the Bundesliga outfit.
The 20-year-old hopes they rekindle talks once the summer window re-opens and that Dortmund moderate their demands for £55m. Dortmund have named him in their Club World Cup squad.
Chelsea had earlier pulled out of talks for AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan after the Italians refused to drop their £20m valuation for the 30-year-old.
The Blues had been keen to sign the France No 1, but refused to push beyond £15m, with the 29-year-old having just one year remaining on his Milan contract.

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca will not have Gittens at his disposal for the Club World Cup

Chelsea also missed out on AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan on Tuesday
However, Chelsea did agree a nominal fee with Manchester City for the sale of goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli.
He has signed a one-year deal and is available to City for the Club World Cup.
Bettinelli is expected to be City’s third-choice shot-stopper for the tournament behind Ederson and Stefan Ortega following the departure of Scott Carson.
