A man who attacked a woman with a meat cleaver and left her with life-changing injuries because he “couldn’t get his own way” has been jailed.

Mark Nuttall, 46, subjected the woman to a four-hour attack in his house, first trying to strangle her with a rope before attacking her with a knife and then the cleaver.

Nuttall, of Farnworth, Colton, eventually dialled 999 and told emergency services she had been attacked by someone else. However, he was arrested after the victim told police the truth once she was inside an ambulance.

“The bravery that the victim has shown throughout the investigation is inspiring,” Det Con Jon Liversage, of Greater Manchester Police, said.

“The savagery of this assault cannot be understated.”

The detective said Nuttall attacked his victim when he “couldn’t get his own way” and caused her life-changing injuries from striking her in the head four times.

“While she was bleeding heavily from her head, instead of getting her medical attention, he mocked her,” he said.

Nuttall pleaded guilty to attempted murder and was sentenced at Bolton Crown Court on Monday to 21 years in jail, plus an additional four years on licence.

Det Con Liversage said: “I hope this sentence can now give her and her family some closure.”
