A Louisiana man faces multiple charges after he allegedly fled a traffic stop, jumped into a swamp and was attacked by an alligator while attempting to evade law enforcement on Sunday evening.

Victor M. Rivas, 40, of Montz, was taken into custody following a multi-agency search that required the use of drone technology to locate him in the marshland.

Body camera footage released by the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office captured the moment an alligator trailed and ultimately attacked Rivas as he swam through the water.

According to Louisiana State Police, the incident began on Interstate 10 in Jefferson Parish, where authorities received reports of a Toyota Supra being driven recklessly. The vehicle reportedly struck a concrete barrier near Bonnabel Boulevard, causing a tire blowout, before continuing down the highway.

When state troopers later spotted the damaged vehicle traveling south on Interstate 310 in St. Charles Parish, they pulled Rivas over. Officers reported seeing clear signs of impairment.

During questioning, Rivas reportedly fled on foot and leaped from the elevated section of the interstate into the swamp below.

A joint search by state troopers and St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s deputies briefly located Rivas walking along U.S. Highway 61. As officers approached, Rivas fled into the swamp a second time.

While running and swimming through the marsh, Rivas was attacked by the alligator, sustaining injuries to both of his arms. State police said that despite the injuries, Rivas continued his attempts to flee until drones tracked him down.

Rivas was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment.

Following his release, he was booked on charges of second-offense DWI and resisting an officer. Authorities also secured additional warrants for hit-and-run and careless operation related to the initial crash in Jefferson Parish.

“Impaired driving can lead to serious and unpredictable consequences,” Louisiana State Police said in a public statement. “Motorists are urged to make responsible decisions, plan ahead, and always designate a sober driver. Louisiana State Police appreciates the strong partnership and coordinated efforts of the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office in bringing this incident to a successful resolution.”
