Tottenham Hotspur have reached an agreement with Newcastle United to sign Italian midfielder Sandro Tonali.

Daily Mail Sport understands a six-year deal worth £92.5million is being discussed for the 26-year-old, though personal terms are already in place. That fee could rise to £100m with add-ons centred around Champions League qualification.

Talks intensified earlier on Wednesday evening as Spurs looked to deliver their new-look midfield for Roberto de Zerbi, just 24 hours after agreeing to pay West Ham £85m for Mateus Fernandes.

De Zerbi is understood to have played a big role in convincing his fellow countryman to join his project, and sees the Italy international as a key component to his style of play.

Newcastle had asked about Spurs’ Archie Gray in conversations earlier in the day but stopped short of making a bid.

Tottenham did however accept a £50million offer from Brighton to sell Croatia centre back Luka Vuskovic earlier on.

The additions of Tonali and Fernandes will mark a significant boost for De Zerbi as he looks to rebuild a Spurs squad which has slumped to 17th-placed finishes in each of the last two seasons.

They have already agreed on free agents Martin Dubravka, Marcos Senesi and Andy Robertson while Jan Paul van Hecke arrived from Brighton for £52million.

Spurs also want to add a forward and a winger with Savinho if Manchester City still in their sights.

Despite interest from Nottingham Forest and Napoli, they have yet to receive a bid for wantaway midfielder Lucas Bergvall.

Tottenham have also been linked with a move for Monaco’s Folarin Balogun but club sources say they are exploring other targets.

Ex-AC Milan captain Tonali has made 110 appearances for Newcastle, scoring 10 goals, since signing for the club from the Italian giants back in 2023 in a deal worth £60m.

Just months after moving to the north-east, he received a 10-month suspension after being found guilty of breaching rules on gambling by the Italian Football Federation. He subsequently missed the rest of the season and the Euros that summer.

The Magpies have already sold Anthony Gordon this summer in a deal worth £70m to Barcelona, and could still lose Bruno Guimaraes, who was this week the subject of an offer from Premier League champions Arsenal.
