Carry-on suitcases are the default for many travellers, but even the most reliable models have their flaws. I’ve lost count of the times an overzealous baggage handler has returned a suitcase with a missing wheel, and I’ll never forget the moment a faulty latch left my case wide open on the carousel, my underwear on full display. But if you’re looking for more luggage, we have also rounded up the best check-in suitcases and our best overall luggage brands.

Travel backpacks, on the other hand, provide a lightweight and streamlined alternative that stays with you throughout your journey. While many backpacks look similar at first glance, small details can make a huge difference.

Small stash pockets at the top of the bag are invaluable for storing items such as keys and spare change, while wide straps are great for spreading the weight. Look for additional adjustable chest and waist straps if you need a bag on the larger side (anything over 25L). I’m also a huge fan of backpacks with openings on the sides and at the rear. This will mean you don’t have to rifle through your underwear, toiletries, and bug spray to get to the items you’ve placed at the bottom of your bag.

To work out which bags are best, I put the best options on the market to the test over thousands of miles. I’ve picked out the best ones to suit any type of traveller, for city breaks, business trips, and hiking holidays.

How I tested

A selection of the tried and tested travel backpacks (Tamara Hinson)

I put each backpack through its paces in the course of my job as a travel writer. I tested these bags around the world, particularly on long trips to the Middle East and India. I tested their capabilities in a variety of scenarios, testing them out on casual city breaks as well as long, hard treks through national parks. Each time, I filled them with everything from gadgets and gizmos to cosmetics for more relaxed trips. I wore them for hours at a time, checking for four main things:

  • Evenly distributed weight: I loaded each backpack and walked with it for hours, testing how well the weight spread across my shoulders, back, and hips. I noted whether it stayed balanced or pulled to one side and how it affected my posture during longer trips.
  • Comfort from straps: I assessed the padding, width, and flexibility of the shoulder straps. I paid attention to whether they dug in, rubbed, or adjusted easily, and if the bags came with waist or chest straps.
  • Durability: I examined the bag’s fabric, stitching, zippers, and hardware under real-world use. I tested it with heavier loads and in different conditions to see if it could withstand wear and tear over time.
  • Style: I considered the overall design, colour options, and how sleek or practical the backpack looked. I also noted whether it felt versatile enough to suit city breaks, business trips, or outdoor adventures.
