Thomas Tuchel has revealed that Ben White will ‘clear the air’ with his England team-mates who were there when he walked out of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
The Arsenal defender decided to quit camp after the group stage because of what was thought to be an issue with Gareth Southgate’s assistant coach, Steve Holland.
White has not played for England since, rejecting the chance to rejoin Southgate’s squads, and only this week has he returned to the set-up as a late replacement for the injured Jarrell Quansah.
And Tuchel says the 28-year-old is in the process of explaining to the likes of Jude Bellingham, Harry Kane and Jordan Pickford why he has snubbed his country for more than three years.
‘Everyone deserves a second chance, but I don’t even know if he did something wrong or what exactly happened,’ said the England boss. ‘If you believe it or not, I didn’t hear a story about it. I asked him and he didn’t want to speak about it. I didn’t want to know about it because I think he deserves a second chance. He has not put a foot wrong with me. Something must have happened, because if a player leaves from a tournament it’s never good and it never can be nothing.
‘But an explanation among the players who were there, to clear the air, is sure in progress. I’m not sure if ‘apologise’ is the right word, but maybe just to clear the air with the players who were there, I think he has done and will do with the majority of the players who come now.’
Ben White has been called up to the England squad for the first time since the 2022 World Cup, when he entered a self-imposed exile from international football
Thomas Tuchel said White will hold ‘clear the air’ talks with his England team-mates
If White does feature against Uruguay at Wembley this evening, Tuchel has urged fans not to boo him.
‘I hope everyone can support, because he plays for England and we play in a positive moment,’ he said. ‘I can imagine there are some strong opinions out there. People have to trust me that he behaves very, very well. He was positive about coming back and was desperate for many months to come back. Now he has the chance and is eager to prove a point. Hopefully people give him a fair chance.’
Meanwhile, Tuchel says the pressure is on Cole Palmer to impress during this camp, with the Chelsea playmaker having featured only once under the German. The 23-year-old is competing with Bellingham, Phil Foden, Morgan Rogers and Eberechi Eze for a No.10 berth.
‘Honestly, he has to show because we have more evidence without him than with him, so the pressure is on him,’ said Tuchel. ‘He cannot hold back. He needs to understand he fights for his place and we will not hand anything to anyone on a silver platter.
‘He had a difficult season but he has also had a difficult spell with the national team. He was only once available for us and when he was available, we decided to stick with the same squad, so there is big competition for his best position, number 10.
‘I saw him live against Arsenal and for the first time in a long time, I had the feeling his stride was back to the original lengths. Before I felt he was not free and the stride was not long enough, the acceleration was not there and the movement was not free.
‘But he is back to full confidence and we see it in training. He really tries. When I hug him (in training), that means he is smiling, otherwise he would not get a hug. He is in good spirits, he is open and he is communicating and is showing his quality. He is very engaged in the group and these are very important steps to show the performance to be involved and have connections within the group, so he will get his chances during the next matches.’
Jordan Pickford is set to captain England tonight with John Stones likely to miss out because of a calf problem.
LIKELY ENGLAND XI: Pickford; Livramento, Tomori, Maguire, Hall; Mainoo, Wharton; Madueke, Palmer, Rashford; Calvert-Lewin
