Scores of Manchester United fans were left red-faced after celebrating what they believed was Amad Diallo’s opener in the Europa League final.
Red Devils fans gathered to watch their side take on Tottenham on Wednesday night, hoping for a win that would salvage something from their miserable season.
But they were ultimately left heartbroken by Brennan Johnson’s first-half strike that ended a 17-year trophy drought for the north Londoners and capped off United’s disastrous term.
However, early on in the night, many Red Devils supporters thought they had taken the lead when Diallo fired a fierce shot from a tight angle. The Ivory Coast international’s effort whistle just wide of the far post but the angle of the coverage made the strike appear as if it had nestled in the back of Guglielmo Vicario’s net.
This prompted widespread celebrations among a host of United fans, with the elation lasting for some seconds before the sinking realisation, and no doubt some embarrassment, set in.
Though misguided, it proved to be a rare bright spark on a humbling night for Ruben Amorim’s side, who failed to breach the determined rearguard of their Premier League rivals.

In the hours that have followed, the brutal reality of a future without European football and the riches it provides has dawned, with stars including Luke Shaw and Bruno Fernandes discussing the possibility of exits from the club.
Shaw, who was a surprise starter in Bilbao, issued a dejected apology to United supporters and admitted that players must consider leaving Old Trafford this summer.
Fernandes, meanwhile, offered to depart if the club decide to ‘cash in’ on him amid interest from the Saudi Pro League.
United have stated their faith in Amorim and claim they have not changed their position that he is the right man for the job.

‘I have nothing to show to the fans, so in this moment it is a little bit of faith [that is required],’ he said.
‘Let’s see [on the future]. Like I said before, I am always open.
‘If the board and fans feel that I am not the right guy, I will go in the next day without any conversation about compensation, but I will not quit.
‘I am really confident on my job and as you see I will not change nothing in the way I do things.’
