Aussie tennis star Alex de Minaur achieves major career milestone: ‘pretty cool moment’

  • Aussie has won 300 matches on the ATP circuit
  • Turned pro in 2015, now nestled in world top 10

He is yet to win a grand slam, but Australia’s top-ranked tennis player Alex de Minaur has chalked up a significant personal milestone, winning his 300th career match on the ATP circuit.

It followed an impressive hardcourt campaign this year, with his latest victory at the Vienna Open in Austria.

The on-court triumph was de Minaur’s 38th victory on the surface this season.

The world No.7 proved far too good for Jurij Rodionov, crushing the local hope 6-4 6-1 in their round-of-32 clash.

Win number 300 also saw the ‘Demon’ become only the second player born in 1999 or later to have achieved the milestone.

The on-court roadrunner is in decent company, with the only other player to have achieved the feat being four-time major winner and world No.2 Jannik Sinner.

‘It’s pretty cool,’ de Minaur said post match.

‘You go through this sport, through your career, and you don’t really get time or many options to really let something sink in.

‘This is one of those things that is a pretty cool moment, to get to 300 (wins).

‘Obviously it seems what has been a long career, and I’ve enjoyed those 300 victories.’

De Minaur, 26, was at his bustling best against the Austrian world No.154, who early on looked inspired.

But Rodionov’s game fell apart in the second set as the third-seed de Minaur cruised to victory in 80 minutes.

De Minaur, who claimed his 10th career title when he took out the Washington Open in July, is seeded behind Sinner and world No.3 Alexander Zverev in Vienna.

And de Minaur is well aware if he is to emulate the likes of Lleyton Hewitt and Ash Barty, he must go deeper in majors.

The Sydney-raised star is yet to progress beyond the quarter-finals at any of the four slams after entering the ATP top 10 for the first time in 2024.
