  • Seems to be a magnet for Ashes controversy

When it comes to Ashes drama, Aussie star Alex Carey clearly does it better than most.

On day one of the third Ashes Test in Adelaide, the 34-year-old was the hometown hero, posting a classy century against England.

Post-game, Carey admitted he should have been given out when on 72 after edging a wide Josh Tongue delivery which was caught by Jamie Smith.

The wicket-keeper instantly signalled for the decision to be reviewed, but DRS umpire Chris Gaffaney upheld the not-out decision by on-field umpire Ahsan Raza.

Snicko showed a big spike when the review was called by the tourists – but not at the same time as the ball passed close to the edge of the bat.

This was later revealed to have resulted from a ‘calibration error.’

Carey said in his press conference he thought he had edged the ball from Tongue.

‘I thought there was a feather or some sort of noise when it passed the bat,’ he told reporters.

‘If I was given out I think I would have reviewed it, probably not confidently.’

Carey also quipped he was ‘clearly not’ a walker.

And after Australia were bowled out for 371 on day two, Carey was again in the spotlight.

The wicket-keeper claimed a catch – and the dismissal would have been monumental – England’s best batsman Joe Root.

Given his ‘form’, countless supporters in the United Kingdom no doubt felt Carey didn’t hold the chance.

The third umpire (DRS) later ruled the ball bounced before Carey gloved it, meaning Root stayed at the crease.

‘Maybe the Poms will stop whinging now…not likely though,’ teased one Aussie fan on X.

‘Clearly out, but for PR reasons they had to make up for the mistake on Wednesday,’ another posted.

‘Disgraceful (Joe) Root didn’t walk,’ said a third.

In 2023, Carey attracted world headlines following his infamous stumping of Jonny Bairstow at Lord’s during the Ashes series.

The dismissal was within the laws of the game – which were devised in England.
