Arsenal star ‘could switch international allegiance’ – and has been ‘promised’ a place in their 2026 World Cup squad

An Arsenal star is considering changing his international allegiance, according to a report.

The defender has been in fine form so far this season following his summer move to the Premier League, costing the Gunners £13million from Valencia in Spain.

And it is Spain who he currently represents. The player in question has featured for his country at Under-15, U-16, U-18, U-19 and U-21 levels, but has not yet been capped by the senior side.

Born in Alicante, the 21-year-old has his sights set on a spot at next year’s World Cup, but will need to impress quickly if he is to force his way into the Spanish set-up.

Or, there is another option. According to Spanish publication Diario AS, Colombia are hoping they will be able to convince the player to make the swap to represent the South American side.

The player in question is Cristhian Mosquera, who holds a Colombian passport and has reportedly been guaranteed a place at the World Cup if he does opt to swap.

Mosquera’s parents are from Colombia, and it’s not the first time the country have tried to lure him into their set-up.

According to Football Espana, an effort to do so was also made in 2023, but Mosquera was convinced to stay with Spain, and he would go onto become captain of the Under-21 side.

There is, though, reportedly more chance that Mosquera takes up the offer on this occasion, despite the Spanish FA rating him highly.

In the Spain set-up, he is behind the likes of Dean Huijsen, Robin Le Normand and Pau Cubarsi, meaning he would have to go some way to convince Luis de la Fuente to give him the call.

It is a similar situation at Arsenal, with William Saliba and Gabriel currently Mikel Arteta’s first-choice centre back pairing.

Mosquera has deputised this season, however, with the defender playing eight games so far – including two in the Champions League – when Saliba was out injured.
