Arch Manning’s backup Matthew Caldwell tossed the game-winning touchdown for Texas against Mississippi State on Saturday after Peyton and Eli’s nephew suffered an apparent upper body injury earlier in the overtime period.

Texas coach Steve Sarkisian did not have an immediate post-game update for Manning, who is now 5-2 as a starter this season after the Longhorns began the year as the preseason No. 1 in the country. Texas is now 6-2 and 3-1 Southeastern Conference.

Manning was hurt at the end of a 13-yard scramble, allowing Caldwell to step up to throw a 10-yard pass to Emmett Mosley. Mississippi State fumbled on its final possession, securing the win for Texas.

Afterwards, Sarkisian credited Caldwell’s camaraderie with Manning for helping him take over during such a critical situation.

‘I think his rapport with Arch was a big part of it. They have a great relationship,’ Sarkisian said of Caldwell. ‘What a moment for that guy to step in and make that throw.’

Manning had one of his stronger performances before getting hurt. The New Orleans native and grandson of Saints quarterback Archie completed 29 of 46 passes for 346 yards and three touchdowns.

He did, however, toss his fifth interception of the season.

Texas actually trailed 31-14 in the third quarter, but Manning led the Longhorns to 24 points in the fourth to tie the game.

‘I think he grew up a lot tonight,’ Sarkisian said of Manning, who was the top recruit in the country just a few years ago.

The Coach added: ‘He does everything the right way.’

No. 22 Texas now welcomes No. 10 Vanderbilt in Austin ahead of an all-important showdown with No. 5 Georgia.
