Moments after the shock firing of Chicago Sky head coach Teresa Weatherspoon was made public, the team’s biggest star, Angel Reese, said she was ‘heartbroken’ over losing her ‘unsung hero.’
Weatherspoon was hired by the Sky in October 2023 and the team missed the playoffs this year for the first time since 2018 with a 13-27 record.
Yet, Reese clearly did not want to see Weatherspoon depart the team despite Chicago not reaching its season-long goals.
‘I’m heartbroken. I’m literally lost for words knowing what this women meant to me in such a pivotal point in my life,’ Reese said. ‘She was the only person that believed in me. The one that trusted me.’
‘Many don’t even know what it’s like to be a black women in sports when nobody believes in you. You had a tough job. All the crazy circumstances that we went through this year & when your back was against the wall, you always believed. I came to Chicago because of YOU.’

Weatherspoon was fired Thursday night by Chicago after one year in charge of the team
‘You were an unsung hero in my life. We built a relationship in a short amount of time that will last forever. I’ll never question God why he brings people in my life and takes them away from me in the capacity that I need them but I’ve always believed everyone is in your life for a reason and a season.’
‘You were the best reason & season. You didn’t deserve this but I can’t thank you enough. I love you Tspoon.’
Weatherspoon is an early pioneer of the WNBA, having played for the New York Liberty from 1997-2003 and the Los Angeles Sparks for one season.
Who the Sky turn to is unclear, especially with a young core that appeared to rally around Weatherspoon in her first season in charge.
Reese was selected No 7 overall by the Sky during this year’s WNBA Draft.
Reese played for national-championship coach Kim Mulkey at LSU, who would likely not leave for the WNBA.
