Jamie Redknapp believes Ange Postecoglou needs to focus on winning a cup competition after Tottenham’s top-four hopes were dented significantly by Liverpool on Sunday evening.
Spurs were given a hiding by Arne Slot’s red-hot league leaders as they shipped six goals at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
A chaotic game in north London saw Mohamed Salah and Luis Diaz rip apart Postecoglou’s side, bagging a brace each with Dominik Szoboszlai and Alex Mac Allister also getting on the scoresheet.
Strikes from James Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski, and Dominic Solanke made the hammering look a little less one-sided, but the scoreline was hugely flattering for the Lilywhites.
The humbling leaves Postecoglou’s side in the bottom half of the table for Christmas, eight points off the Champions League spots, and former Spurs midfielder Redknapp has urged the Australian coach to focus on winning the Carabao Cup.
‘He needs a cup,’ said Redknapp on Sky Sports. ‘He needs a cup now because it looks like the top four is out of the picture.

Redknapp reckons the Champions League spots are ‘out of the picture’ for Spurs as they fell eight points adrift of them
‘The club hasn’t won a trophy for so long. That’s what he’s got to be thinking about. He said a lot of quotes lately, but one was that he “always wins a trophy in my second year”.’
Tottenham have not won a trophy for 16 years, last getting their hands on silverware in 2008 when they beat Chelsea to lift the League Cup.
Postecoglou’s side are now just three games away from repeating the feat after they edged a seven-goal thriller in their Carabao Cup quarter-final against Manchester United on Thursday.
The victory saw them earn a date with Slot’s side once again, who are the current holders, with a two-legged affair taking place at the end of January and the beginning of February.
With Liverpool fighting at the top of both the Premier League and the Champions League, Redknapp believes Postecoglou needs to take advantage of the Reds’ other priorities.
‘[They play] a Liverpool side where you don’t know where Liverpool’s prior Liverpool’s priorities right now are obviously the Premier League, the Champions League,’ added Redknapp. ‘That’s the least of their priorities, the Carabao Cup.
‘[Tottenham are] at home first, they can you get a good result, then you go back to Anfield. Then you’re gonna play Newcastle or Arsenal.’
Nine managers have tried and failed to bring home a trophy while at Spurs since Juande Ramos’ success in the 2007-08 campaign.

Spurs booked their spot in the Carabao Cup semi-final with a 4-3 win over Man United on Thursday
They will face the current holders Liverpool again in a two-legged tie which takes place in the new year
Spurs have reached four finals since they last brought home silverware, losing all four, including three finals in the League Cup.
Redknapp continued: ‘[If] you win a trophy here, he’ll have legendary status because that’s what the fans really want.’
Tottenham also remain in the Europa League, sitting one place off the automatic qualification places with two matches left to play.
Another opportunity for a trophy could be the FA Cup, which Tottenham enter in the third round away at Non-League side Tamworth on January 12.
