New Newcastle United recruit Nick Woltemade has made the perfect start to life on Tyneside with a debut goal against Wolves.

The German was thrown in from the start by Eddie Howe – and it took just 29 minutes for Woltemade to repay the faith shown in him by the Magpies boss and announce himself at St James’ Park.

His goal came in the form of a header, as you’d expect from a forward standing at six-foot-six tall, as he leaped above a defender to send the ball home at the far post.

There’s no better way to endear yourself to your new home supporters than by scoring a goal and, as Woltemade wheeled away in celebration, his name rang out around St James’ Park.

‘Woltemade, Woltemade, Woltemade, ole, ole ole!’, the Newcastle fans chanted.

It seems after the departure of former Newcastle talesman Alexander Isak, the Geordies have quickly found themselves a new hero.

The big-man signed for a club-record fee of £69million in the final week of the window, at last ending the Magpies’ search for their Isak successor.

Having netted 12 goals in 28 Bundesliga goals for Stuttgart last term, it’s hoped Woltemade can hill a hole up-front which been an obvious flaw in Eddie Howe’s side so far this term.

After the completion of his signing, Howe said: ‘He’s strong in a lot of areas – he has great technical ability and has proven himself to be a real threat in one of Europe’s top leagues – but he’s still also at an age where he has plenty of room to develop and grow here.’

Woltemade himself beamed after sealing his move to the north-east, adding: ‘I’m really happy to be at this amazing club. From the first contact, I felt like the club really wanted me and had big plans for me,” Woltemade said in his first Newcastle interview.

‘I know the stadium from watching games on television – it looks amazing and I know the atmosphere is crazy. I’m really excited to play and start scoring goals here.’

After making a strong start to life at Newcastle, Woltemade will well and truly have the chance to make himself a fan favourite when his side host Barcelona on Thursday.

The comes a trip to Bournemouth for Howe and co on the weekend, before an EFL Cup tie against Bradford the following midweek.
