Lessons in Lifestyle

Aldi has recalled a popular dessert in the U.S. over a potential contamination with a foreign object, posing a serious safety risk to consumers.

According to an enforcement report from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, more than 2,800 cases of Specially Selected Vanilla Crème Brûlée were recalled on April 14 because they may have contained pieces of glass.

On April 28, the FDA elevated the recall to a Class II, which means that eating or using the affected items can pose a serious health risk, according to the agency.

The recalled sweet treat, packed in 3.6-ounce glass jars, was sold at Aldi stores in seven states: Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, New York and Virginia.

Affected items, manufactured by Lactalis Canada, have the use by date of May 9, 2026, product number 710298-4099100342826 and barcode number 4099100342826.

Although there haven’t been any illnesses reported, Aldi is urging consumers to either throw the dessert away immediately or return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.

The crème brûlée is one of several food products that have been recalled due to health or safety risks. Last week, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service issued a public health alert for meat and poultry products that contained FDA-regulated ingredients formulated with dry milk powder.

The dairy-based product, which the FDA has now recalled, could have been contaminated with salmonella, a bacterium that causes food poisoning.

As a result, two pizzas with the affected dry milk powder and sold at Aldi stores nationwide, were recalled. The products are named Mama Cozzi’s Biscuit Crust Sausage & Cheese Breakfast Pizza and another called Biscuit Crust Cooked Pork Belly Crumbles, Cooked Bacon Topping, Pepper & Onion Breakfast Pizza.

The recall also included three Great Value frozen pizzas sold at Walmart: Thin Crust Chicken Bacon Ranch, Ultra Thin Crust Chicken Bacon Ranch and Stuffed Crust Chicken Bacon Ranch.

Also this week, Costco recalled a Giovanni Rana pasta item, labeled as Rustic Beef Sauce & Creamy Burrata Cheese Ravioli, because some batches in fact contained a shrimp filling in lobster sauce. The problem was discovered after Giovanni Rana received complaints from two consumers who said the product contained shrimp ravioli, not the beef sauce and burrata as advertised.

The labeling error poses a risk of a serious allergic reaction for people who have a crustacean shellfish allergy.
