Register to take part in the Active Travel Challenge this June

Businesses across Northern Ireland are being encouraged to sign up for the 2026 Active Travel Challenge, a free initiative that promotes healthier, more sustainable travel in June.

The month-long challenge encourages people to walk, cycle, run or use public transport for everyday journeys, helping organisations promote staff wellbeing while reducing travel costs and carbon emissions.

Why your business should take part

Taking part in the challenge can help your organisation

  • improve employee health and wellbeing through increased physical activity
  • reduce carbon emissions and support sustainability goals
  • lower travel-related costs for staff
  • build team engagement through friendly competition
  • demonstrate your commitment to environmental and social responsibility

The 2025 campaign saw over 1,600 participants across Northern Ireland, with more than 27,000 journeys logged, over 18,000kg of CO2 saved and more than £22,000 saved in travel costs. Organisers aim to build on this momentum with increased business participation in 2026.

How the challenge works

Throughout June, participants log journeys made by walking, cycling, public transport or other active travel options. These can include commuting, business travel, school runs, shopping trips or leisure activities. The challenge is open to individuals and organisations of all sizes across Northern Ireland, including businesses, community groups and public sector bodies.

How to register

Registration for the Active Travel Challenge 2026 is now open. Sign up and find out more.

The initiative is delivered by a partnership including Translink, Walk Wheel Cycle Trust, the Public Health Agency, Belfast Health and Social Care Trust, Belfast City Council, Derry City and Strabane District Council and the Western Health and Social Care Trust, with support from the Department for Infrastructure.
