Chair Yoga

Chair yoga is a gentle form of yoga done while seated or
using a chair for support. It is designed to make yoga more accessible,
especially for older adults, beginners, or anyone with limited mobility,
injury, or balance concerns. It is also a great movement and mobility option
for people who spend long hours at their desk.

Instead of getting down on the floor, you perform modified
poses from a sturdy chair. Movements might include seated stretches, gentle
twists, leg lifts, and breathing exercises. You can also use the chair for
support in standing poses, helping improve balance safely.

How to do it:

Start by sitting tall with your feet flat on the floor.
Focus on slow, controlled movements and steady breathing. Simple exercises
include shoulder rolls, neck stretches, seated forward bends, and gentle spinal
twists. Sessions often include mindful breathing to help relax the body and
mind.

Benefits:

Chair yoga offers many of the same benefits as traditional yoga, but with less strain and lower
risk of falls. It can improve flexibility, strength, joint mobility, and
posture. Research suggests it may reduce pain and support mental wellbeing by
lowering stress and anxiety. It is particularly helpful for people with chronic
conditions, recovering from injury, or unable to attend a class.

Tips to get started:

Move at your own pace and avoid pushing into pain. Focus on
slow, even breathing. Choose a sturdy, non-slip chair without wheels, and keep
both feel grounded. If you have a medical condition, check with a healthcare
professional before starting.

Chair yoga is a simple, safe way to stay active without any
equipment except your chair!
