The Oakland Athletics’ All-Star catcher Shea Langeliers may miss the rest of the MLB season after suffering a sickening knee injury.
According to ESPN, the 28-year-old has torn a meniscus in his knee and is weighing up whether or not to have surgery that would keep him sidelined until the end of the year.
It comes as another major blow to the injury-ravaged A’s and rules Langeliers, widely considered to be one of the best catchers in the game, out of any potential trade.
The A’s desperately wanted to keep their key player but teams were beginning to circle ahead of the August 3 deadline.
The A’s currently sit at 44-60 with a league-worst -122 run differential after some dismal pitching this season.
But they have lost a number of stars to injury, including Brent Rooker, who needed season-ending knee surgery.

Nick Kurtz and Jacob Wilson have also both spent time out of action over the course of the campaign.
Langeliers has hit 23 home runs and 51 RBIs so far this season. After arriving in Oakland as part of the Matt Olson trade in 2022, he has established himself as a force with the bat.
Before this injury, he was on course to become only the third catcher in MLB history to put up three-straight years of at least 29 home runs.
In Langeliers’ absence, backup Jonah Heim will take over as catcher. The former All-Star has also been discussed as a potential trade option but he now has a huge role to play for the A’s.
