Ford Motor Co. has announced the recall of more than half a million Bronco vehicles due to a wiring harness defect that poses a significant fire risk. The recall affects 565,691 Ford Broncos and Bronco Raptors from model years 2021-2026.

The issue stems from inadequate protection on the engine compartment’s wiring harness, which can lead to exposed wires and subsequent short-circuiting. Drivers might observe smoke emanating from air vents or a warning message on their dashboard, potentially followed by flames from the passenger side of the engine compartment. Ford estimates that approximately one per cent of the affected vehicles exhibit this defect, though the company has not received any reports of accidents or injuries related to the fault.

To rectify the problem, authorised dealerships will install new protective covers over the wiring at no cost to the owner. Ford’s internal recall number is 26S55, while the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) campaign number is 26V468. Vehicle identification numbers (VINs) involved in this recall are searchable on NHTSA.gov. Owners can contact Ford customer service on 1-866-436-7332 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety hotline on 1-888-327-4236 for more information.

This comes weeks after Ford issued a recall for more than 741,000 vehicles across the U.S. A critical transmission defect could compromise the park system, significantly raising the risk of a crash or injury. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) detailed that the recall encompasses specific Ford F-150, Lincoln Aviator, Ford Explorer, Lincoln Navigator, and Ford Expedition models manufactured between 2018 and 2021.

A serious safety hazard has been identified in certain vehicles due to a transmission flaw that could cause unintended movement. The issue involves the temporary engagement of the transmission’s parking pawl while the vehicle is in motion, particularly during specific shifts. This can damage park system components. If damaged, the transmission’s ability to securely hold the vehicle in “park” could be impaired, especially without the parking brake engaged. This defect creates a significant risk of unexpected vehicle movement.

Owners of affected Ford and Lincoln vehicles will receive mailed notifications instructing them to visit a dealership. Technicians will update the Powertrain Control Module software to its latest version. They will also inspect the transmission for park system damage, replacing components as needed, all at no cost to the owner.
