South Australian health officials are being investigated for allegedly accessing Tony Modra’s medical records while the AFL icon was in hospital.

The Adelaide Crows legend has returned home and is on the mend after suffering life-threatening injuries when a tree branch crashed through the windshield of his truck on June 18.

Now allegations – first reported by Channel Seven – have emerged that up to eight members of staff may have inappropriately accessed his medical records while he was in hospital.

‘As a result of a standard audit, three staff are currently under investigation for potential inappropriate access of a Southern Adelaide Local Health Network patient’s record,’ South Australia Health said in a statement.

‘Another five employees are being assessed to ensure their access was always appropriate. SA Health’s investigations are continuing,’ the statement continued.

South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas has since responded to the allegations.

‘My message to people who would think about doing the wrong thing within SA Health is just don’t take the risk because you’re going to get caught…’ he said.

‘I mean, if you work in SA Health, you’re there because you’ve been trained with a very particular set of skills.

‘You’ve probably spent years developing those skills to be able to work in SA Health.

‘And then if you lose your job because you do the wrong thing … that’s a pretty big punishment.’

A similar incident occurred in 2015 when 13 SA Helth staff were disciplined for inappropriately accessing the medical records of Cy Walsh, son of slain Crows legend, Phil Walsh.
