Madeleine McCann’s younger brother will represent Scotland in swimming at the upcoming Commonwealth Games.

Sean McCann, 21, has been selected to compete for the Scots in the pool at the home Games, with swimming beginning Friday.

Madeleine disappeared from her family’s holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal, at the age of three, back in 2007, and has been missing ever since. Sean was just two years old at the time.

19 years on, Sean is now making his senior international bow as a swimmer, and will compete alongside Olympic champion Duncan Scott for his national team.

McCann is a distance freestyler and is expected to compete in the 400m, 800m, and 1500m freestyle at the slimmed-down Games.

It is yet to be known whether parents Kate and Gerry McCann will attend the event to watch their children compete.

Sean has been competing in the pool since the age of eight, and his career took him to the international stage at youth level in 2023 as he competed at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Trinidad and Tobago.

The distance swimmer, who originally hails from Leicester but qualifies to represent Scotland through his father Gerry, is a student at Loughborough University, studying Chemical Engineering.

Loughborough is known for nurturing Great Britain’s hottest prospects in the pool, with multiple Olympic champion Adam Peaty coming through the ranks at the performance centre.

Sean is looking to follow in the footsteps of the likes of Peaty by qualifying for the next Olympic Games in 2028.

There is confidence that his upcoming appearance has him on teh right path to competing for Team GB in LA in two years.

‘I started competitive sport when I was 8, joining Charnwood Triathlon Club,’ He once wrote on the Joe Humphries Memorial Trust website.

‘It was here that I discovered my passion for swimming, and I joined Loughborough Town Swimming Club to increase the number of swim sessions I did per week.

‘At the age of 10 I was selected to swim at City of Leicester (Leicestershire’s performance swimming club), and I have since go on to win multiple county titles as well as becoming regional and National champion in my age group.

‘In order to have achieved this, I have had to remain extremely dedicated, getting up at 4am multiple mornings each week to train, since the age of 11.

‘I am currently studying chemical engineering at Loughborough university, and train nine times a week in the pool, as well as three gym sessions, totalling over 20 hours of training week.

‘I am aiming to compete at the 2026 Commonwealth Games and also the 2028 Olympics in LA.’
