Whether we think Morgan Rogers is worth £117million, it is some statement by Chelsea. A positively cold one, and not only because Rogers shares the same celebration as Cole Palmer.

It is a club not currently involved in European football striking several blows at once.

A blow to Arsenal, who were interested in the 23-year-old England international, and in particular to Mikel Arteta, whose admiration for Rogers pre-dates this transfer window.

A blow to those claiming Chelsea were broke and could not afford to spend this summer, only for them to offer to eclipse the British record of £116m for Elliot Anderson to Manchester City.

A blow to the suggestion that a lack of Champions League football meant they could not compete with their rivals, with this representing a hijacking on the Premier League’s very champions.

We will add this titanic transfer is not finalised as of yet. It is a verbal agreement between Aston Villa and Chelsea which has been struck at £117m. Personal terms are likewise agreed with the player, who is ready to sign a six-year deal through to 2032 with the option of an additional year.

Yet it is quite the response from Chelsea. Missing out on Europe entirely was embarrassing, no question about it. Finishing 10th in the Premier League was farcical, some way beneath their own standards. But they are now in line to secure a statement signing which, to their credit, would meet the ‘ready-made’ promises made by Behdad Eghbali and Co in the build-up to this summer.

Chelsea played their first friendly under Xabi Alonso on Saturday at Cobham. As revealed by Daily Mail Sport, the score was 3-1, and the scorers were Jamie Gittens, Liam Delap, and Emmanuel Emegha. We can now add, via one source, that the formation used was 4-2-3-1. Read into that what you will after Alonso’s history of using 3-4-2-1 to great success at Bayer Leverkusen.

It is not that Alonso would need to choose between Rogers or Palmer in each match if indeed he chose to use 4-2-3-1 in the future. They are both versatile, and could appear in other attacking positions alongside one another in the same starting line-up.

Chelsea were in for Rogers last summer also – Daily Mail Sport reported their interest in June 2025 at the same time that they had reignited talks for Jamie Gittens out of Borussia Dortmund – though Villa did not want to sell him at that time.

As the January 2026 window approached, Enzo Maresca was asked during the broadcast section of his press conference before a Chelsea-Villa game whether he would swap Rogers for Palmer. The Blues’ then-head coach answered: ‘No. Because I love Cole and Cole is my player.’

If finalised, Alonso will not need to be asked that same question at his own pressers moving forward. He would have them both, as a pair of No 10s or by trusting their versatility in his attacking line.

Alonso was involved in the talks for Rogers, including speaking to the transfer target personally. Arsenal were the frontrunners previously, with Chelsea said to have been pleading with Rogers to let them showcase their plan to him. Arteta’s side taking their sweet time opened up the opportunity for Alonso and Co. Presumably, Palmer had a say also, given he and Rogers are such close friends. Reece James, the Chelsea captain, has also been in the same England camp for the last month.

Chelsea will need to sell this summer, and they have no shortage of candidates for sale. Daily Mail Sport has been told Villa asked about Nicolas Jackson during club-to-club talks. They and Unai Emery are long-time admirers of the 25-year-old striker, though nothing serious came of his name cropping up in that moment.

It is understood Chelsea are still undecided on what to do with Jackson, with Alonso having been keen to take a look at the scorer in pre-season. Jackson is expected to fly to join his team-mates amid their tour of Australia and Asia unless something disrupts that schedule in the meantime, such as an offer too large to turn down arriving.

Given his World Cup involvement with England, whose last match was a third-place play-off with France on Saturday night, Rogers will now be due his downtime. The customary break is three weeks. Players can choose to cut that short if they wish.

Yet, if signed, it means Chelsea may still be waiting a little while before Rogers is officially with their squad. They will hope he is worth the wait for £117m.
