A number of rail services across the North West have been cancelled or delayed due to hot temperatures.
There are no Northern Rail trains running from Manchester Victoria to Liverpool Lime Street or from Manchester Piccadilly to Alderley Edge, among widespread disruption to other services across the region.
Confirming delays and cancellations, Northern Rail said high temperatures can affect passenger safety by causing issues with overhead lines or causing tracks to buckle.
More information on changes specific services can be found on the Northern Railway website, external.
“We are balancing a risk of either an issue with trains or tracks, meaning trains are then stranded,” Stuart Taylor Northern Rail service delivery director said.
“By running a reduced service we minimise the risk of that happening and it enables us to offer a more certain timetable to customers, accepting that it is not to the normal standard we like to deliver.”
Northern Rail has said it is advising customers to check before they travel, adding that there are “no planned widespread service reductions over the weekend” but “there may be a small number of cancellations”.
