Sir Keir Starmer has given his verdict on his likely successor Andy Burnham, in his first interview following his resignation.
Speaking to the BBC on Friday (3 July), the prime minister said that he holds “no animosity” towards the Makerfield MP. “We’ve always got along,” he said, before laughing as he added: “He supports the wrong football club… but we get on.”
“I want what comes next to succeed, and I’m going to do everything I possibly can to make sure it does succeed,” he said, adding that any support he gives to the next government will be delivered behind the scenes, “not on camera or radio”.
