As the storm loomed menacingly over the Mexico City Stadium and the lightning raked across the sky, it felt like a fitting build-up to a match of this magnitude.

History is always on the line at the World Cup, but with Mexico bidding for another historic performance at a home World Cup and Ecuador looking to win their first ever knockout game, this one had all the ingredients for a classic.

With the match taking place in the Mexican capital, it felt like intangible factors might play the biggest part. There was a feeling in the air – maybe it’s the weather, an overriding sense of excitement, or the weight of a collective consciousness willing a team to win.

At this famous venue on Tuesday night, it felt like all of this and more as Mexico powered past Ecuador 2-0 to book a place in the World Cup round of 16.

In a statement ahead of the game, Ecuador had referred to their relationship with Mexico as “brotherly”. There was nothing brotherly about this.

In fact, you wouldn’t have wished the early Mexico onslaught on your worst enemy. Ecuador had shocked Germany with their intensity after equalising in that game less than a week ago, but it was their turn to be subject to pressure, and this was unrelenting,

The hosts had ventured into the Ecuador box three times in as many minutes in the opening stages before teenage talent Gilberto Mora blasted over.

The youngster – who became the second youngest player ever to start a World Cup knockout match behind only Pele – also picked up the ball at an angle in the area before flashing a brilliant effort a whisker wide of the far post, while Raul Jimenez perhaps should have opened the scoring as he nodded wide from Luis Romo’s tempting cross.

It didn’t feel like it would take long for Mexico to open the scoring and they were ahead within 22 minutes, Julián Quinones picking up the ball on the counter and surging into the box before lashing an unstoppable drive past Hernán Galíndez for 1-0.

The Azteca erupted and it felt like a huge step towards victory even at that early stage, with Ecuador reeling and Mexico delivering an attacking display full of verve, bravery and invention.

And while hydration breaks have often thrown teams off during this World Cup, even this could not help Ecuador. Jimenez was not to miss out on his own slice of history, with the Wolves striker exchanging passes with Quinones before scoring an unstoppable effort.

A quick Google search suggests that the noise level at the Mexico City Stadium can routinely reach 118 decibels, which is roughly as loud as a jet engine. If you wanted to know how many people it takes to make that noise, the answer is roughly 80,000. If you were wondering what sort of event might provoke this cacophony of noise, the answer is Jimenez rifling it into the top corner from just outside the box.

Such was the reaction to the second goal that the cameras showing the players’ celebrations could not focus, forced to sway back and forth as 80,000-odd fans did the same.

Half-time was met with the expected reaction, but if that first 45 minutes had enchanted the fans with a commendable display of attacking football, the second was an altogether less entertaining affair. However, on reflection fans might find it just an encouraging for different reasons.

The hosts were much more happy to sit back after half-time, absorbing a lot of pressure as every last-ditch tackle, every Rangel save and every counter-attack was met with deafening encouragement.

Ecuador were able to fashion a few chances, just as they had done in the first half, when Gonzalo Plata fired against the woodwork after a superb nutmeg on the edge of the Mexico box. However, Mexico still managed to threaten too, with Cesar Montes going close with two headers in as many minutes in arguably the best chances of the half.

It was always going to be a difficult game for the visitors but they were still a little disappointing, looking one-dimensional in attack and creating very little while being far too reliant on long balls.

As tempers flared late on, Piero Hincapie was sent off for covering his mouth when speaking. It may be controversial, but in this case it summed up the frustration of an Ecuador side who were simply helpless on the day. Sometimes, everything is against you.

And sometimes everything goes your way. Mexico have never made it past the fifth game at a Word Cup, though they made the quarter-finals on both previous occasions in which they’ve been hosts, in 1970 and 1986.

They will be hoping that this is a good sign for 2026, and they will not have to wait long for their next shot at history, with either England or DR Congo making the now-dreaded trip to the Azteca in the round of 16 on 5 July.

This legendary venue has seen some of football’s most famous nights, but it now has a modern-day Mexico match that will go down in history too. Could there be another on the way?
