One person was killed and another seriously injured Sunday in a shooting at a popular San Jose entertainment district that has been hosting World Cup fan zone events, police said.

The shooting happened at San Pedro Square, a busy gathering spot where crowds have been watching World Cup matches on large screens. Police said no World Cup games were being shown at the time, with the day’s only tournament match ending around 2 p.m. local time.

San Jose police said one victim was pronounced dead at the scene, while a second victim was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The incident is being investigated as a homicide, police said. Several nearby streets were closed as authorities investigated the scene.

San Pedro Square is one of several locations across the San Francisco Bay Area hosting World Cup watch parties, drawing large crowds throughout the tournament. The region has hosted multiple World Cup matches, including a recent knockout-stage game featuring the United States.

A Reuters reporter at the scene observed a heavy police presence, with multiple patrol vehicles and emergency responders in the area. The scene was cordoned off, and several nearby businesses closed following the shooting.

A security guard who witnessed the aftermath said she saw an injured person being treated by emergency personnel as police spoke with witnesses and security staff.

Authorities have not released additional details about the circumstances surrounding the shooting or identified any suspects. The investigation remains ongoing.
