Shropshire Council supports residents to find alternative accommodation

Shropshire Council is working closely with Ideal Care Home in Shrewsbury, its residents, their families and advocates and health and care professionals to support them to identify suitable alternative accommodation that reflects their individual needs, preferences and wellbeing.

This is in response to a decision that has been made by the owner of the home to close it so that the existing building can be demolished and a new building can be constructed on the site. The redevelopment will create an opportunity for modern accommodation and services that are better designed to meet current and future needs.

The council recognises that this is a significant and emotional time for residents, families, staff and the wider community. Supporting residents’ wellbeing and working closely with those who know them best will remain the priority throughout.

This support will include person-centred planning, careful assessment and ongoing support throughout the transition, with the aim of ensuring that each person is helped to move to the right alternative provision with the right care and support in place.

Ideal Care Home has provided care, stability and support to people with complex needs for many years, and the council and its partners would like to acknowledge the dedication and commitment of the staff and everyone involved in delivering that service.

This investment will help ensure that, in the future, people in Shropshire can benefit from high-quality care and support in an environment that is modern, appropriate and fit for purpose.

While this marks the end of an important chapter for Ideal Care Home in its current form, it also creates the opportunity for a new beginning. Shropshire Council remains committed both to supporting residents with care and compassion through this transition and to ensuring the site can once again provide valued services for Shropshire residents in the future.

Councillor Ruth Houghton, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for social care, said:

“While the decision to close the current care home is not one made by the council, the development of a new home on the site will provide much-improved accommodation for future residents.

“Our priority is to support residents and their families through this period of change. Our social care staff will work closely with everyone affected, carrying out individual assessments to help identify suitable alternative accommodation that meets each person’s needs.

“We also have an experienced commissioning team, who have supported care home closures before, working alongside skilled and committed social workers to ensure residents and families receive the right guidance and support throughout the process.”
