Shropshire Council addresses concerns about grass cutting

Shropshire Council understands the concerns residents have raised about grass growth, weeds and general street cleanliness in parts of the county and recognises that, in some areas, standards have not met expectations at the start of the season.

This follows a significant transformation in how the council’s Street Scene services are now delivered. The new delivery model represents a step change in approach, designed to provide a more consistent and sustainable service over the longer term. As with any large-scale change, there has been a necessary bedding-in period while new arrangements, staff and equipment are aligned.

As a result, the grass cutting programme began later than usual this year, and teams encountered longer grass which requires a more gradual and controlled cutting approach to restore areas to the expected standard.

The service is starting to stabilise, with crews progressing through planned cutting routes and additional focus being given where recovery is needed. A clear improvement plan is in place, supported by strengthened performance monitoring and operational oversight.

Alongside grass cutting, work continues to address weeds, and fly-tipping, with activity prioritised based on safety and local need.

The council remains focused on embedding the new approach and delivering a reliable, consistent service for communities across Shropshire.

David Vasmer, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member with responsibility for street scene, said

“We know how important it is for communities to see areas well maintained, and we do understand the concerns being raised. However, we are making changes that will enable us to provide a grass cutting service that is more efficient. Our focus is on making the best use of what we have, and as the new approach beds in, residents should see a more consistent and reliable standard.”
