Two spectators have been taken to hospital and Saturday’s final two stages have been cancelled after an accident at the Donegal International Rally.

The accident occurred in the first pass of the Gartan stage of the rally on Saturday afternoon, which was the 12th stage of 20 in the three-day event, which is one of the biggest motorsport events on the island of Ireland.

No update was provided by organisers on the condition of the two spectators, who have been taken to Letterkenny University Hospital.

The final two stages that were meant to run on Saturday have been cancelled.

A decision whether to finish the rally with the final six stages on Sunday will be taken later on Saturday.

Prior to the stoppage, five-time World Rally Championship event winner Kris Meeke and co-driver Liam Regan were leading the rally by 13.9 seconds over Callum Devine, who is aiming to become the first driver to win the rally four times in a row and navigator Noel O’Sullivan.

M-Sport WRC driver Josh McErlean and Eoin Treacy were in third place, 31.6 seconds off the lead, while European Rally Championship regular Philip Allen and Craig Drew was in fourth.

On his first appearance at the rally in 18 years, Toyota driver Meeke led Devine and McErlean by 11.8 seconds after the opening six stages on Friday.

In the modified class, Isle of Man TT record wins holder Michael Dunlop restarted the rally on Saturday morning after being forced out of Friday’s six stages with a mechanical issue on his Ford Escort.
