The acclaimed musical adaptation of David Nicholls’ bestselling novel, One Day, is poised to transfer to London’s West End later this year.

Following a successful world premiere at the Royal Lyceum Theatre in Edinburgh earlier this year, One Day – The Musical will open at the Garrick Theatre in November.

Nicholls’s 2009 novel, a global phenomenon selling over five million copies, has previously inspired a 2011 film and a 2024 television series. Jamie Muscato and Sharon Rose are set to reprise their roles as the beloved characters Dex and Em.

A new adaptation, it has been written by the Lyceum’s former artistic director David Greig, who previously worked on Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, Touching The Void and The Lorax, while the music and lyrics come from Abner and Amanda, with additional material by Jeremy Sams.

It is being directed by Tony and Olivier award nominee Max Webster, who previously worked with David Tennant and Cush Jumbo on Macbeth and The Importance Of Being Ernest with Ncuti Gatwa.

The story follows Emma and Dexter who meet on the night of their graduation, a day that changes them both forever.

Producer Melting Pot teased of the show: “As Em and Dex’s lives intertwine through joy and heartbreak, missed opportunities and second chances, they navigate love, ambition, and the unpredictable twists of life.

“The fresh and emotionally rich interpretation captures the intensity of youthful romance, the moments that define us forever, and the enduring hope that love will find its way.”

The production company’s directors Simon Friend and Hanna Osmolska also said: “From the moment we encountered One Day, we recognised its extraordinary emotional power.

“This is a story for anyone who has been in love, for anyone whose life hasn’t gone to plan, for anyone whose life has, for anyone who has had a parent, or a child, or a friend – so everyone really – which is why is has resonated with millions of people around the world.

“With a remarkable creative team, a score that takes us on the emotional rollercoaster of Emma and Dexter’s journey, and the world-class talents of Jamie Muscato and Sharon Rose originating the lead roles, One Day The Musical promises to be a very special show indeed. We cannot wait to bring this story to life on the West End stage.”

Muscato’s theatre credits include Cabaret, The Great Gatsby, and Moulin Rouge!. On screen he has appeared in The Trial Of Christine Keeler and Cilla.

Rose has starred in the titular role in Sylvia at the Old Vic Theatre and also played Eliza Hamilton in Lin-Manuel Miranda’s award-winning Hamilton.

She has also appeared in Beautiful: The Carol King Musical and Sister Act, as well as on screen in the BBC’s Silent Witness and feature film Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey, with Forest Whitaker.

Tickets are now on sale at onedaymusical.com.
