Charles Barkley’s halftime analysis of San Antonio Spurs vs New York Knicks took a dramatic twist when he saw footage of Cardi B’s halftime show at Madison Square Garden on Monday night.
A short clip of the rapper, 33, in full flow was shown during the halftime interval on ESPN, with host presenter Ernie Johnson joking that the crew had been ‘competing with Cardi B’ to discuss the events of the game over her show.
It was then that Barkley, 63, chimed in with a line on her appearance that left his co-hosts in hysterics.
‘I don’t know if those (are) B’s,’ Barkley called out. ‘They might be Cardi D’s… I’m pretty sure those aren’t B’s… She’s got the wrong initials.’
As his fellow analysts were left cackling with laughter, they shared a tweet from a fan claiming that Shaquille O’Neal was ‘glued’ to Cardi B’s performance instead of the broadcast.
‘I sure am,’ O’Neal called out, with the laughter at Barkley’s comment continuing around him.

Fans watching from home seemed to find the comment as funny as Barkley’s colleagues.
‘Sir, another Chuck classic has hit the airwaves,’ one wrote on X, while another commented: ‘Barkley has no filter whatsoever… every broadcast turns into chaos.’
A different viewer wrote: ‘Only Charles Barkley can roast somebody that clean during a live game and make the whole timeline lose it. Legend behavior right there.’
Not all the fan reaction was positive though. One observer wrote: ‘The man is a grown adult on national television reducing a performer to her body like it’s 1995. It’s not funny, it’s not clever, it’s just sad.’
Cardi B’s performance was another huge high-profile moment on a night that was one of the biggest sporting events in New York’s history.
She has been more closely associated with football than basketball in recent months, dating the former New England Patriots wide receiver Stefon Diggs.
Madison Square Garden was the venue of one of their first dates when the Knicks beat the Boston Celtics in the playoffs in May 2025.
A year and a month later and the couple appear to have reunited after splitting up around Diggs’ and the Patriots Super Bowl appearance in San Francisco in early February. The Patriots lost that game to the Seattle Seahawks and Diggs is now a free agent after being released by New England.

The couple, who share an infant son, seemingly confirmed they were back together with a handsy appearance at a charity event staged by the NFL player’s Diggs Deep Foundation.
During the 2025 NFL season, Cardi B occasionally sat with Patriots owner Robert Kraft to cheer Diggs on. Kraft was also in attendance on Monday to watch the Knicks take on Victor Wembanyama and his team.
The Knicks, meanwhile, last won an NBA championship in 1973 and last appeared in a Finals in 1999. And with the team winning the first two games of the series in San Antonio, they have returned to the Big Apple on the brink of history.
