Anthony Martial’s football misadventures have reached a new nadir as the forward has reportedly been cut loose by Monterrey.
The Mexican club and the Frenchman, 30, have agreed to end his deal a year early, according to Fabrizio Romano.
Martial only signed in September last year and was contracted until 2027, with the option for an extra year, but he has been cut off after just one goal and three assists in 20 games.
It leaves the former Manchester United striker at square one yet again after he also endured a middling stint at AEK Athens from 2024-25.
His time with Monterrey was marred by a dislocated shoulder in February, forcing him to be stretchered off in agony in a match against Club Leon.
Martial’s final appearance for one of the grandest sides in Central America came on March 18 against Cruz Azul in the CONCACAF Champions Cup.
Anthony Martial has reportedly agreed to leave Monterrey a year early after a tricky spell
Later that month, the striker was reportedly exiled from training after he reacted furiously to not being substituted on during Monterrey’s 3-2 defeat by Chivas de Guadalajara.
According to Mexican outlet TUDN, Martial threw a strop on the substitutes’ bench when youngster Joaquin Moxica was brought on in the 74th minute, with Monterrey three goals behind.
Furious at being overlooked by manager Nicolas Sanchez, Martial lost his temper and remained an unused substitute for the rest of the game.
Martial’s reported meltdown was spotted by Monterrey’s staff and the ex-Red Devils striker was subsequently punished, ordered to train away from the main group for the remainder of the week.
When he arrived at Old Trafford for £36million in 2015, the highest fee for a teenager at the time, Martial was expected to kick on and become one of the world’s best talents in attack, especially after scoring against Liverpool on his debut.
But the Frenchman struggled for consistency in Manchester amid injury issues and frequent managerial changes and eventually left with a tally of just over 10 goals a season across all competitions at Old Trafford.
After falling down the pecking order in 2022, Martial was loaned out to Sevilla where he endured a barren spell in front of goal, scoring just once in 12 games, before completing a permanent free transfer away to AEK Athens in 2024.
He scored nine goals in 24 games with the Greek club, despite being on the most lucrative deal in their history, and was left out of their Champions League squad before departing due to his unworkable wage.
