Dramatic footage as Jet2 flight from UK aborts Lanzarote landing – UK Times

A Jet2 flight from the UK was forced to abort a landing in the Canary Islands with its tail coming close to touching the runway.

Flight LS11DF from Birmingham to Lanzarote performed a go-around seconds after its wheels hit the ground.

Footage from Lanzarote Webcam’s cameras shows the aircraft climbing steeply away from the tarmac following the attempt to land.

Lanzarote Webcam captioned the video: “Yesterday, we saw this nice touch-and-go-around with almost tail touch of Jet2 flight from Birmingham (LS11DF/EXS11DF) when it landed on the runway at Lanzarote Airport.”

The Airbus A321 had departed Birmingham at 3.30pm on Sunday, eventually landing at César Manrique-Lanzarote airport in Arrecife on its second attempt at around 7.33pm local time.

It is not immediately clear why the pilot made the call for a takeoff or go-around, known in aviation as a TOGA.

One social media user commented: “That was pretty close to a tail strike imo. Wonder if that’s why it went back up?”

Another said, “He must have come in too fast and couldn’t employ the spoilers. The nose went up and not down; was there a strong gust of wind. If that happens, then TOGA was the right call.”

The Independent has contacted Jet2 for comment.

In October, Storm Amy forced a Ryanair flight to divert several times while attempting to land.

Flight FR3418 was aiming to land in Prestwick, Scotland, on Friday, 3 October, when amber wind warnings caused by Storm Amy were put in place for north and west Scotland.

Departing the Italian city of Pisa for a flight that usually takes around two and a half hours, passengers did not arrive at their final destination until more than 10 hours later, after several landing attempts and a coach journey to South Ayrshire from Manchester, where the flight eventually landed.
