Jaxson Dart has explained why he agreed to introduce Donald Trump at a Republican rally last week amid controversy over his encounter with the president – leaving the MAGA world furious.
The New York Giants quarterback sparked liberal fury when he was seen cozying up to Trump at the rally in Suffern, New York, last Friday, with one of his NFL teammates even calling him out on social media over the interaction.
Yet while playing down talk of a locker-room feud with Abdul Carter – the Giants colleague who appeared to hit out at him on X – Dart also distanced himself from the Republican party after speaking out on his shock MAGA appearance.
‘The president position has always been a position that I’ve well respected, regardless of political affiliation, regardless of political party and my intentions were just that,’ he said.
The 23-year-old added: ‘I also understand that in this world, politics can be a sensitive matter, a sensitive topic. I also understand that I am the quarterback of the New York Giants, and that involves a lot of responsibility. It’s under a limelight, under a microscope, and there’s a lot that comes with that.’
Dart’s comments have not gone down well with several conservative commentators, who have fumed that the NFL star should not have been made to explain himself over the meeting with Trump.

Ex-FBI deputy director and podcast host Dan Bongino told Dart in a video message on social media: ‘Listen, Jaxson… I don’t know you at all, you appear very talented. However, I don’t know if you apologized… but do not apologize! You are a free American citizen. You are a potential rock star, All-Pro player in this league at some point. You don’t need to apologize to people. I hope you didn’t.’
‘You take a stance in your life, there’s always a counterparty,’ Bongino continued. ‘That’s why it’s a stance, someone else is gonna hate it. You can’t try to make everybody happy, it is a huge mistake.
‘Your friends don’t need it, your allies don’t need it, and your enemies don’t give a s***.’
Sports journalist and Trump ally Emily Austin also wrote on X about Dart: ‘Apparently in America you’re only allowed to have political opinions if they fall on one side. The second someone openly supports Trump, the mob comes out.’
‘There’s a political double standard in sports… Jaxson Dart has been vilified by media & shamed into addressing his team because he introduced President Trump at a rally,’ said conservative podcast host and Outkick personality Jon Root.
‘LeBron James spoke at a Hillary Clinton rally & Steph Curry spoke at the DNC. No issue. AND Abdul Carter isn’t expected to address the team for immaturely putting his quarterback on blast online.
‘Why? The vast majority of sports media are a bunch of intolerant, close-minded, radical liberals with Trump Derangement Syndrome.’
A number of MAGA supporters echoed similar sentiments, including one who wrote on X: ‘Jaxson Dart supports Our President… Don’t see anything wrong with that… I’m sick of you lefties thinking that you decide what people should think and say…’
While another commented: ‘I hate to break it to you lefties. Jaxson Dart will gain more fans than he will lose. This is because he loves America and supports America’s elected President. Pile on the leftist hate. The patriotic love and support for him will only grow.’
Dart has been subjected to fierce criticism from the left wing since crossing paths with Trump, including from The View’s Joy Behar.
Behar divided opinion by branding the quarterback ‘stupid’ and ‘racist’ for speaking at the Republican rally, while appearing to suggest that he could be targeted by players on the field over his apparent political stance.
‘For somebody to back a guy like Trump, whose history in discrimination and racism goes back to housing discrimination in the ’70s, DEI attacks, and posting pictures of the Obamas as apes… when he’s on a team that’s 55 to 60 percent of the NFL, that much percentage of black people, that is just the definition of stupidity and racist in my opinion,’ the outspoken TV host said.
Behar then went on to suggest that he may ‘need a little extra padding’ on the football field, suggesting he will be targeted more aggressively by opposition players for backing Trump.
Dart has made attempts to repair the fractured Giants locker room following the backlash surrounding his introduction of Trump.

The day after his teammate’s MAGA appearance, Carter had commented on a clip of it and wrote: ‘Thought this s*** was AI , what we doing man’.
Amid speculation over a potential civil war in the New York camp, Dart addressed his teammates during a meeting on Wednesday, according to NFL insiders Mike Garafolo and Ian Rapoport.
The signal caller is said to have called the meeting to discuss his introduction of Trump with he and the team now moving past the issue.
The players reportedly worked to put the controversy behind them as they look towards the upcoming 2026 NFL season.
Carter later took to social media to insist that he and Dart were ‘good,’ while sharing that they had spoken ‘as men.’
