New Zealand defender Tim Payne has unexpectedly seen his fame increase rapidly in the last few days all because of a South American content creator.
Payne, 32, has seen his Instagram follower count jump from just under 5000, to more than 1.4 million in quick time.
The increase is all because of an Argentinian influencer El Scarso, who boasts more than half a million Instagram followers himself.
El Scarso, also known as Valen Scarsini, set out to uncover the least-known player heading to the upcoming World Cup.
He eventually did so, understanding it to be the veteran New Zealand defender.
Scarsini then challenged his followers, and urged them to increase Payne’s follower count and notoriety.

‘We have to start making videos feeding the legend of Tim Payne,’ Scarsini said.
‘If you have the World Cup [sticker] album, upload a photo with his sticker.’
‘The goal is to see how many people know Tim Payne before the World Cup starts.’
Payne’s new found fame has also come with a song supporting him being made.
‘I’ve got his back. I cheer him on. I’ve been rooting for him from the beginning,’ the song’s chorus reads.
‘Tim Payne, from cradle to grave. You’re a crack. I cheer you on, every step,’
Payne has since responded to the unexpected rise in his notoriety.
‘Was wondering why my socials were blowing up and found your post, man,’ he said.
‘Appreciate the love! Gracias, hermano,’ Payne continued.
‘I just want to say a massive thank you first to you Valen.
‘It’s been a pretty crazy 48 hours to say the least.
‘I just wanted to also express that I’m very grateful to be representing my country and I appreciate all the love from all around the world.’
