Formula One legend Alain Prost reportedly suffered a head injury after being attacked during an armed break-in at his home earlier this week.

Swiss newspaper Blick reported that the four-time world champion, now 71, was attacked on Tuesday morning at his family home in Nyon.

Prost was said to have sustained a minor head injury after being immediately attacked by the perpetrators.

The intruders were said to have threatened his son into opening a safe under threat of violence, before fleeing with the stolen goods.

Police have declined to confirm the identity of the victims, but confirmed a criminal investigation has been launched.

‘According to initial findings of the investigation, on Tuesday morning, May 19, several masked individuals broke into the house,’ the Vaud Public Prosecutor’s Office said in a statement on Thursday.

‘Once inside, they threatened the occupants and slightly injured one family member in the head, under circumstances that are still being investigated.

‘The perpetrators then forced another family member to open a safe before fleeing with the stolen goods, the precise contents of which are currently being assessed.

‘The Vaud cantonal police immediately deployed a large-scale search operation and notified the public prosecutor’s office, which opened a criminal investigation. The investigation is ongoing to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.

‘This event required the involvement of several patrols from the Vaud gendarmerie, the canine brigade, the Nyon-Region Police, security police inspectors and the scientific police brigade, a psychological support team from the ESU for the family, the Federal Office of Customs and Border Security and the French Gendarmerie.’

Blick stated that Prost suffered only minor injuries in the attack, but was left in shock at the incident.

He has since returned to Dubai, where he lives part time.

Prost won the F1 world title in 1985, 1986, 1989 and 1993, with the Frenchman having a famous rivalry with Ayrton Senna.

His 51 Grand Prix victories had been a long-standing record, but his total is now fifth all-time behind Lewis Hamilton, Michael Schumacher, Max Verstappen and Sebastian Vettel.
