In the days before his shock death, something seemed off with NASCAR icon Kyle Busch.

The larger-than-life racing legend appeared frail in one of his last-known encounters with fans as a ‘severe’ illness quietly took its toll behind the scenes, just weeks after he mysteriously withdrew from a public outing with friends.

Busch, one of the most decorated drivers in NASCAR history, tragically passed away at the age of 41 on Thursday. A cause of death has not yet been announced, but tributes have flooded in from the racing world following the announcement of his shock passing.

The day before he died, California woman Pamela D Hauck ran into Busch after traveling to Charlotte to watch him race at the Coca-Cola 600 this Sunday.

Hauck and two other women took a snap with the NASCAR great after meeting him at the Richard Childress Racing Museum on Wednesday, and in a post on Facebook she revealed he was ‘not feeling great’ at the time.

After sharing the photo in the wake of his death, she wrote: ‘I’m absolutely devastated Beyond Belief. I’m here for the week in Charlotte because of him, to see him, and watch him win one more time. Reconciling it will never happen again is impossible’.

‘RIP Kyle,’ Hauck added. ‘Your devoted Rowdy Warrior’.

In the comments section, Hauck was asked by another user if she noticed anything that was ‘off’ about Busch.

‘He was definitely off,’ she responded, ‘peekish not feeling great just not himself, but we were so damned excited he was there it was a special treat.’

Hauck then said in a reply to another user that she was at the museum for a ‘personal tour’ and is ‘now feeling cursed on a trip I’ve been planning to take for years.’

She also claimed that Busch seemed ‘like he had a bad cold or [was] getting over the flu’ and ‘just crummy’.

Hauck declined to comment when approached by The Daily Mail.

Just hours after meeting her, Busch was rushed to hospital after he became unresponsive in a simulator, it has emerged.

He is believed to have been testing in the Chevrolet racing simulator in Concord, North Carolina when he was taken ill, according the Associated Press – which says several people familiar with the situation have confirmed the details to them.

The simulator Busch was in would almost certainly have been preparing him for his next race, the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

The simulators replicate the motion and G-forces drivers would experience at speed on a track in real life.

Chevrolet’s website describes them as being ‘as close as drivers can get to racing without actually strapping in – tracks are scanned to a very high resolution… along with each bump or unique part of the surface.’

While Hauck said he didn’t seem himself the day before his death, Andrew Murstein – who was friends with Busch for roughly 20 years – has raised the possibility that his good pal may have been struggling with an illness three weeks ago.

In an interview with The Daily Mail, Murstein, an American tycoon and former NASCAR team owner, explained how Busch recently backed out of a ‘sports-themed’ dinner he was hosting at legendary NYC restaurant Rao’s in mysterious fashion.

The businessman also invited New York Giants head coach John Harbaugh, the team’s former co-owner Jonathan Tisch and ex-New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan to the swanky dinner, yet Busch told him he was unable to join them three weeks ago.

‘I invited him and he wanted to come down, but he couldn’t make it,’ Murstein said after describing the news of his death as ‘shocking’.

‘I don’t know if he was feeling ill at the time and he didn’t want to tell me. But he wasn’t able to come.’

Busch leaves behind wife Samantha and their two children; son Brexton, 11, and daughter Lennix, 4.

Brexton turned 11 just three days before his dad’s passing, with Kyle sharing photos of his son and sending him a birthday tribute in his final post on Instagram.

He wrote alongside the pictures: ‘Happy Birthday Brexton!!! Your mom & I are so proud of who you’re turning out to be! You’re the best kid on & off the track, you amaze us every day. Keep doing what you’re doing and there is no limit to what you’ll accomplish! Love you buddy!’

Murstein’s friendship with Busch began when he sounded out the driving icon about potentially buying a NASCAR team 20 years ago. He would later go on to become co-owner of Richard Petty Motorsports from 2011-21.

As well as talking business together, Murstein said there was always one topic his longtime friend wanted to discuss.

‘I had dinner with him at Rao’s, had dinner with him at Nobu. He loved great restaurants. He would talk to me about his family a lot at dinner and he was a great family man,’ he recalled.

‘He was a raucous, aggressive driver, and for points of his life he was also like that with the media, but behind the scenes he was a family man.’

Murstein also described Busch as ‘the kind of person that embraced people quickly’ – which he cites as one of the reasons they became so close.

Before welcoming Brexton in 2015, Kyle and Samantha – who got married in December 2010 – suffered heartbreaking setbacks when trying to have a second child.

The couple battled infertility problems for over a decade, resulting in several miscarriages and failed cycles, which prompted them to launch The Samantha and Kyle Busch Bundle of Joy Fund.

The nonprofit is dedicated to providing financial assistance to couples struggling with infertility, with over $2million in grants contributing to the births of over 100 babies.

Kyle and Samantha’s second child, Lennix, was welcomed via surrogate in May 2022.

Busch never shied away from speaking about his and Samantha’s infertility struggles in a level-headed manner, Murstein insisted.

‘He would talk about it, but he did it in a very eloquent and rational way,’ he explained. ‘It was not out of bitterness or anything. It was how could he help other people start a family and how proud he was of his wife.’

Days before his death, Busch radioed for medical assistance from his car in the middle of one of his final NASCAR races on May 10 in upstate New York.

In the clip from that race, he was asking for a doctor to urgently meet him to give him ‘a shot’.

With 38 laps to go in the NASCAR Cup Series game, Busch told his team over the radio: ‘Can somebody try to find Bill Heisel? He’s the kindred doctor guy. Tell him I need him after the race, please.’

He was then asked whether he needed the doctor at his car or his bus, to which he replied: ‘Uh, bus. I’m going to need a shot.’

According to the TV broadcast, Busch had been struggling with a sinus cold that was exacerbated by the intense G-forces and elevation changes at the New York road course. Buch finished that race in eighth place.

He competed at Dover last weekend and won the Trucks Series race for Spire Motorsports. He then finished 17th at the NASCAR All-Star race, his final race.

Following his death on Thursday, chilling 911 audio has revealed that Busch was struggling to breathe, overheating and coughing up blood before he passed.

During an emergency call placed around 5:30pm Wednesday, a 911 caller was heard urgently requesting an ambulance to a training facility in Concord, North Carolina – where the racing legend was preparing for this weekend’s Coca-Cola 600 event in Charlotte.

Audio of the chilling call has been released by TMZ, with the caller saying that Busch had ‘shortness of breath’ and was ‘very hot’ before his passing.

‘[He] thinks he’s going to pass out, and he’s producing a little bit of blood, coughing up some blood,’ the caller added.

They confirmed that Busch was still conscious at the time while repeatedly telling dispatch: ‘He is awake. He’s awake. He’s awake.

According to the audio, the NASCAR great was lying on a bathroom floor at the facility while employees prepared for paramedics to arrive.

The caller asked responding crews to shut off their sirens when approaching the building and told them he would wait outside and flag them down at a side entrance.

Earlier this year, Busch and his wife settled an $8.5m lawsuit with a life insurance company in which the driver said he was misled into purchasing policies marketed as safe retirement plans.

Kyle and Samantha reached an out-of-court settlement with Pacific Life Insurance Company, according to a February 26 court filing. Terms were confidential.

The Busches sued Pacific Life last October, claiming they lost more than $8.5m after being misled into purchasing life insurance policies. They claim they paid over $10.4m in premiums based on misleading illustrations and false promises of guaranteed returns.

‘We’re going to show the world that this was a huge and utter scam,’ Samantha said in a video shared by the couple on social media in October 2025.

Now, Busch’s death months after winning the $8.5m settlement against the insurance company has sparked wild speculation from social-media sleuths.

One user posted on X: ‘Just two months ago, Kyle Busch won an $8.5million settlement in a big lawsuit against a major insurance company. Then, despite being in good health, he declines rapidly this week and suddenly dies. I don’t care what anyone says, a thorough investigation needs to happen here!’

‘The timing has left many people with serious questions,’ said another. ‘Whether there is any connection or not, a transparent and thorough investigation would help establish the facts and put speculation to rest.’

There is no evidence to back up any of those conspiracy theories, nevertheless, and authorities have not announced that foul play was involved in his death.

Robert Rikard, the lawyer who represented Kyle and Samantha in their lawsuit, said in the wake of Busch’s passing: ‘In March, the Busch family and Pacific Life were able to resolve this dispute. Both sides worked constructively to achieve a confidential result that is mutually acceptable and avoids further legal proceedings.

‘On a personal level, this loss is incredibly difficult. Over the course of this representation, I came to know Kyle not just as a client, but as a friend. He was intensely driven, thoughtful, loyal to the people around him, and deeply devoted to his family. Spending time working with him, talking through life, family, racing, and the future, you quickly understood there was much more to him than what people saw publicly. I’ll miss Rowdy, a nickname that he certainly earned.

‘My heart is with Samantha, his children, and everyone who loved him. His passing is truly heartbreaking, and he was taken far too soon.’
